Professor at the Astronomy Institute of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico

Born in Mexico, studied at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and Ph. D. studies in Astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley. At present, Silvia Torres-Peimbert is Emeritus professor at the Astronomy Institute UNAM. Her field of work has been the theoretical and observational studies of interstellar matter. She has concentrated on studies of HII regions and planetary nebulae.

She has received several prizes, among them: Academic Medal of the Mexican Physical Society, UNAM Prize for Exact Sciences, Heberto Castillo Medal of the Institute of Science and Technology of Mexico City, Scientific Medal of the Academy of the Developing World. National Prize of Sciences and Arts in Mexico, L’Oreal–UNESCO Prize for Women in Science, Hans A. Bethe Prize of American Physical Society. She has also been editor of Revista Mexicana de Astronomía y Astrofísica from 1974 to 1998, and of Revista Mexicana de Astronomía y Astrofísica Serie de Conferencias. President of the International Astronomical Union (2015 - 2018).
