Distinguished Professor, Oregon State University, and U.S. Science Envoy for the Ocean

Dr. Jane Lubchenco, University Distinguished Professor, Oregon State University, and U.S. Science Envoy for the Ocean, Department of State, is a marine ecologist with expertise in the ocean, climate change, and interactions between the environment and human well-being. She was Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) (2009-2013) where she helped craft the U.S. National Ocean Policy and return U.S. fisheries to sustainability and profitability. A Ph.D. in ecology from Harvard University, she is one of the “most highly cited” ecologists in the world and member of the National Academy of Sciences. She has been President of the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and received numerous awards including 20 honorary doctorates.

She is passionate about science communication, ocean conservation and infusing good science into policy making and public understanding. She served on the Science Advisory Board for UNESCO from 1996-1999. And she served as President-Elect, President, and Chair of the Board of the International Council for Science (ICSU)(1999-2007), a UNESCO partner.
