Covid-19 crisis and underwater cultural heritage - archaeologists give their views to UNESCO

In just a few short months, the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic within societies coupled with the measures taken by governments around the world have already leveled particularly severe consequences on the cultural sector? including underwater cultural heritage. The underwater cultural heritage sector was no exception to the rule when its professionals found themselves unable to carry out their missions of protection and evaluation on the field. Underwater cultural heritage is our common good. Today, threats to this heritage, such as treasure hunting, looting and trafficking, are more relevant than ever. In this context, the suspension of funding in some cases is concerning. Archaeologists have agreed to testify to the secretariat of the UNESCO's 2001 Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage and to share their insights regarding the future of their profession and its missions.
