Great buildings and monuments, such as the Parthenon, the Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat, Borobudur (Central Java), the Maya site of Tikal, Machu Picchu in the Andes, Persepolis, speak to us across the centuries. Their builders succeeded in arresting in stone the expression of the beliefs and aspirations of their cultures. Their survival, repeated elsewhere in thousands of others of equal or lesser importance, has been a matter of chance, but today threats to the existence of all sites and monuments are steadily increasing.
