UNESCO Biosphere Reserves are learning sites for sustainable development that can also contribute to peace-building, especially across borders through the designation of transboundary sites. As transboundary Biosphere Reserves require two or more countries to apply together, they represent commitment and cooperation among countries for the conservation of biodiversity.br / br /At the 30th session of the International Coordinating Council on the Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB-ICC), held in Palembang, Indonesia in July 2018, Suncheon in the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Mount Kumgang in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) were added together to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR).br / br /This simultaneous designation of biosphere reserves is expected to contribute to peace on the Korean Peninsula, and to encourage cooperation between the two Koreas under a shared vision of sustainable development and peace.br /
The Biosphere Reserves and Peace Workshop will be held to raise awareness of the significant role of Biosphere Reserves in promoting peace through transboundary cooperation on biodiversity conservation between neighboring countries. Through the sharing of good practices, the workshop will explore the ways to improve management of Biosphere Reserves so that they can contribute effectively to sustainable development and peace.br /It is organized dring the 31st Session of the MAB-ICCbr / br /Languagesbr /• English, French and Spanish (simultaneous translation will be provided.)br / br /Provisional programme br /br /13:00-15:00 Exhibition of photos (Korean biosphere reserves)br /br /15:00-15:15 Opening Ceremonybr /- Remarks from the Republic of Koreabr /- Remarks from the ADG for Natural Sciences, UNESCO (TBC)br /- Group Photobr / br /15:15-15:25 Presentation 1:br /The role of biosphere reserves as a catalyst for peacebuildingbr /- Dr. Miguel Clüsener-Godt, br /Director, Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences, UNESCObr /Secretary of the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programmebr /br /15:25-15:35 Presentation 2:br /Peacebuilding through cooperation for biodiversity conservation at the Bosques de Paz Biosphere Reserve (Peru-Ecuador)br /- Dr. Pedro Gamboa Moquillaza, br /Director, National Service of Natural Protected Areas Peru (SERNANP)br /br /15:35-15:50 Presentation 3:br /Experiences in international cooperation and understanding at the Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean (Morocco-Spain)br /- Morocco: Mr. Abdelaziz Hajjaji, br /High Commission for Water and Forests and the Fight against Desertification, Regional Directorbr /- Spain: Mr. Felipe Oliveros Pruaño, br /Biologist of the Junta de Andalucia and Substitute Manager for the Mediterranean Biosphere Reservebr /br /15:50-16:00 Presentation 4:br /Activities for peace in Korean Biosphere Reserves: focusing on Jeju Island, Yeoncheon Imjin River, and Gangwon Eco-Peace Biosphere Reservesbr /- Dr. Cho Do-Soon, br /Co-chairperson, MAB National Committee of the Republic of Koreabr /br /16:00-16:15 QA Sessionbr /br /Hostsbr /• The Republic of Korea and UNESCObr / br /Organizersbr /• Korean National Commission for UNESCO (KNCU)br /• MAB National Committee of the Republic of Koreabr /• UNESCO MAB Secretariatbr / br /With the support of the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of the Environmentbr /br /
