Apprenticeship is a social institution with a long history, having ensured over centuries the transmission of work skills from one generation to the next. Around the world apprenticeship takes different, often modernized forms. In the face of global youth employment crises, large cohorts of unemployed youth and skills mismatches, many countries are exploring the option of introducing or improving apprenticeship schemes as a way to better address these problems. Other countries are trying to modernize and formalize informal and traditional apprenticeships as a way to expand quality technical and vocational education and training (TVET).
This virtual conference aims to deepen our understanding of apprenticeship training, in particular formal, quality apprenticeships. The goal of the conference is to stimulate debate and knowledge sharing between participants on questions such as:
- What are the benefits of apprenticeship training?
- What stakeholders should be involved?
- What are the key elements or challenges in setting-up or improving existing apprenticeships and apprenticeship practices?
- How to advocate for apprenticeship and get the participation of employers?
Participants’ ideas, views and experiences will help to identify key issues and good practices from across the globe.
