Biopic, 2015, 100 minutes, original version in Arabic, subtitled in English, with Tawfeek Barhom, Ahmed Al Rokh, Hiba Attalah.
Presented with a special screening at the 40th International Film Festival of Toronto, winner of the 2015 APSA Award for Cultural Diversity, under the patronage of UNESCO, at the 9th Asia Pacific Screen Awards, “The Idol” traces the amazing journey of Palestinian singer Mohammed Assaf, whose dream came true in 2013 when he became the first Palestinian to win ‘Arab Idol’, the most prestigious popular singing competition in the Middle East.
From his childhood in Gaza, where he organized a band with his sister and two best friends, performing in street concerts and at weddings, to his remarkable victory, this true story is one of hope, of taking risks and of overcoming hurdles. The magnetic actor Tawfeek Barhom embodies fate and ingenuity under the powerful vision of filmmaker Hany Abu-Assad.
This special screening is organized within the framework of the 10th session of the Intergovernmental Committee of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (2005).
