Sue Vize, s.vize@unesco.orgUnder the ASEAN Education Plan, the governments of ASEAN have committed to undertake a project on social and sustainability sciences to promote teaching, research and networking. Four themes have been chosen and in 2018 the first theme on "greening agrifood systems, ensuring rural sustainability and promoting healthy socioeconomic transformation in South-east Asia" is being launched with this international conference.
The sustainable agrifood systems theme looks at three areas: greening agricultural production, rural sustainability and social transformations in rural communities.
Each theme will have a keynote address by an imminent academic, a panel of speakers from government, civil society and academia to inform a policy dialogue and parallel sessions from presentation of academic papers.
During the parallel sessions there will also be a number of small panels hosted by various partners on themes of agricultural sustainability, farming communities and social transformations.
The conference will be followed by a MOST School on rural sustainability.
