I am currently visiting Associate Professor in Social Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. I am also Associate Professor of Social Policy at the University of Oxford.
My research focusses on the relationship between population and policy in East and South-East Asia.
In this Inclusive Policy Lab, I am seeking to explore a more person-centred approach to policies relating to family formation and population ageing in SE Asia.

In 2017, I am visiting Associate Professor in Social Science, with a joint appointment between the Division of Social Science and the new Institute of Public Policy. During this time I am on research leave from the University of Oxford, where I am Associate Professor of Social Policy. Previously, I have been an adviser in Population and Development at the UK Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology and a Research Scholar at the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis in Austria. I received my education at the University of Cambridge, with a PhD in historical demography.
My research focuses on population and policy issues in Asia. In particular, I work on the causes and consequences of low fertility and population ageing.
I have held a number of research grants to study a wide variety of topics relating to demogrpahic change and public policy. These include population policy in Hong Kong; fertility preferences in Beijing and Taipei; sex-selective abortion in Nepal and youth transition in Europe and Asia. I currently hold a grant to explore the relationship between urbanization and childbearing around the world.
