Dr Lilija Alijeva specialises in the fields of International Relations and International Human Rights Law, and her particular focus is on post-Soviet countries. She researches the human rights of national, ethnic, linguistic, and religious minorities. Her research focuses on the implementation of international norms, international organisations, mobilisation and activity of civil society groups, and international development. Her current projects analyse the latest developments in minority rights legal framework and the role of higher education institutions in global cooperation.

Lilija is a Presidential Fellow (Postdoc) at the City Law School at City (University of London) and an Associate Editor at the International Journal of Human Rights. She recently completed her PhD in Law and Political Science at the School of Advanced Study, University of London. Her doctoral thesis analyses the implementation of the right to effective public participation in post-Soviet Estonia and Latvia for minorities. Currently, she is researching the latest minority rights developments and how higher education institutions promote global cooperation.
