Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Director of the UCI Interdisciplinary Center for the Scientific Study of Ethics and Morality
Expert
I focus on the intersection of ethics, psychology and politics so work on a wide range of topics, from gender equality and moral choice during the Holocaust to moral courage and how people keep their humanity during war. I am perhaps best known for an award-winning trilogy on altruism and moral choice (The Heart of Altruism 1996; The Hand of Compassion 2004; and Ethics in an Age of Terror and Genocide, 2012, all published by Princeton U Press). I love working with students and my most recent honor is the John Sullivan Award for Mentoring, awarded by the International Society of Political Psychology in 2021. I have two forthcoming books: (1) Chloe, Nicole and the Elephant in the Parlor: Essays in Ethics and Identity and (2) When Conscience Calls: What Is Moral Courage? What causes it? I direct a month-long summer internship in ethics each summer; we welcome students from around the world, who may apply at www.ethicscenter.uci.edu.
