Introduction
Professor Ashraf M. Salama is academic, scholar, and Chair in Architecture at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK , Director of the Cluster for Research in Architecture and Urbanism in the Global South since 2014, and Former Head of the School of Architecture (2014-2020). He holds B.Sc. MSc. and PhD in architecture and has received his education at Al Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt and North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, USA. He has published over 170 outputs in the international refereed press; authored and co-edited 14 books. He is the chief editor of the Archnet-IJAR: International Journal of Architectural Research and Open House international. Professor Salama is the UIA 2017 Recipient of Jean Tschumi Prize for Excellence in Architectural Education and Criticism. He has chaired and led three schools of architecture over the past 25 years in Egypt (1996-2001), Qatar (2009-2014), and the United Kingdom (2014-2020). He is a licensed architect in Egypt since 1987, practiced in Egypt (1987-92). He has been a consultant to a number of authorities and development agencies in the Middle East since 2004 and, from 2001 to 04, the Director of Research and Consulting at Adams Group Architects, Charlotte, North Carolina, United States. Ashraf M. Salama, PhD - FRSA – FHEA – A-RIBA – AoU, is Professor of Architecture and Director of Research and of the Cluster of Architecture and Urbanism in the Global South, Department of Architecture, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK. He has led three schools of architecture in Egypt, Qatar, and the United Kingdom, two of which he has founded. His teaching, research, PhD supervision, and consulting have been focusing on sustainable architecture and urban design, with a strong emphasis on the impact of socio-cultural factors on shaping buildings and urban environments. Having secured significant funded research he has authored and edited, 14 books and published over 170 articles and chapters in the international refereed press, Prof Salama is the recipient of the 2017 UIA Jean Tschumi Prize for Excellence in Architectural Education and Criticism and the Editor-in-Chief of Archnet-IJAR: International Journal of Architectural Research.
His latest books include Spatial Design Education: new Directions for Pedagogy in Architecture and Beyond (Ashgate 2015/Routledge 2016); Building Migrant Cities in the Gulf, w/F.Wiedmann (Bloomsbury, 2019); Architectural Excellence in Islamic Societies, w/ M.-El-Ashmouni (Routledge, 2020); and Transformative Pedagogy in Architecture and Urbanism (Umbau Verlag 2009/Routledge Revivals, 2021). He has recently completed his latest book: Influence and Resistance in Post-Independence Egyptian Architecture, w/ M. El-Ashmouni (Routledge, 2022) and is currently completing the co-edited volume of Routledge Companion to Architectural Pedagogies of the Global South, w/ H. Harriss and A. G. Lara.
