Interest in Social Impact of Making Music
Art and culture mediation is a subject in our Social work program. In this subject we focus on how and where
Social workers can interact and connect people.
We teach Social workers to promote dialogue and well-being through art, culture and creative processes, to facilitate dialogue between neighborhood residents, students in schools, inmates in prisons or workers in companies. Social workers can set up platforms to discuss complex themes and loaded emotions. Looking for solutions together in addressing these issues creatively where co-creation is central. A dialogue can be conducted through storytelling, dance, poetry, photography, video or music.
In our Social work program, bringing together different reference frameworks and diversity of people is part of art and culture mediation role.
Our students also do an internship, set up culture and art projects and write a bachelor test. Some bachelor tests investigate the use of music or describe projects that make use of music.
As an example, in the Ostend Street Orchestra, a student researches the impact of music. His test is titled: ‘How can making music together reduce the loneliness of home-living seniors in Ostend?’
Other research questions from students of social work are:
- Can we reduce social exclusion by means of music?
- In what way can music offer opportunities of underpriviledged groups?
- How can we use music to influence policy makers or express resistance?
- How does music contribute to the development of social networks?
Social workers facilitate in art and culture projects to promote dialogue, communication between individuals, groups, organizations and politics to positively influence welfare in society. The musical language is a universal language, abstract and volatile but very accessible for everyone at the same time. An ideal medium for communication.
