I am the scientific consultant of UNESCO-ICQHS, International Center on Qanats and Historic Hydraulic Structures in Yazd-Iran. As a Ph.D. candidate of Sociology at the University of Tehran. I am working on the impact of technology on the transformation of traditional water governance and the role it plays in society. The main technology I am working on is the Internet of Things, more specifically, the application of smart meters on agricultural wells. According to collaboration with the UNESCO center, I have a unique opportunity to play a part in studies regarding intangible aspects of water culture in arid areas of the central plateau of Iran. At the same time, I can monitor the social effects of underground water management on the social lives of Yazdi farmers from ongoing smart meters projects. I’m looking for a way through the intangible culture of Karez civilization and reflexive ecological modernization to mitigate the issue of water in developing countries.
