I am a Professor of Education Policy, Leadership and Innovation in the University of Michigan's School of Education. I am also a Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. My work focuses on building systems to support large-scale instructional improvement, with a particular focus on network-based continuous improvement.

I am a Professor of Education Policy, Leadership, and Innovation in the University of Michigan’s School of Education. I am also a Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. My research, teaching, and outreach focus on the organization and management of education systems, with a particular focus on network-based continuous improvement. With funding from the Brookings Institution, I am currently collaborating in a cross-national study of efforts to transform education systems to support holistic student development, which we are preparing in anticipation of the UN Transforming Education Summit in September 2022. As part of this study, I attended the Pre-Summit in UNESCO in Paris in June 2022. I am co-editor of "The Foundational Handbook on Improvement Research in Education" (Rowman and Littlefield, 2022); author of "Seeing Complexity in Public Education: Problems, Possibilities, and Success for All" (2011, Oxford University Press); and co-author of "Improvement by Design: The Promise of Better Schools" (2014, University of Chicago Press).
