Aisling Swaine is Professor of Gender Studies in the School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice. She was named by A-Political as one of the world's 100 Most Influential People in Gender Policy 2021. Prior to joining UCD, Aisling was Associate Professor of Gender and Security at the Department of Gender Studies, London School of Economics and Political Science, and Associate Professor of International Affairs at The George Washington University, Washington DC. Aisling holds a PhD in law from the Transitional Justice Institute, School of Law, Ulster University. Her research is interdisciplinary engaging with the fields of feminist legal theory, transitional justice, conflict-related violence against women, gender peace and security and gender in global governance. Prior to her academic roles, Aisling worked with the United Nations and international NGOs in humanitarian and post-conflict recovery settings, including Kosovo, Burundi, Timor-Leste and Darfur, Sudan and has undertaken consultancy work in a broad range of development and peacebuilding contexts globally.
