A member of the Commission on a Gender Equal Economy (UK), 2018-2020; working with third-sector organizations and Leeds City Council on provision of social and human services; also currently working with West Yorkshire Combined Authority and other universities on designing policies for post-Covid recovery for the region.
Expert
Gary’s research focuses on discrimination and redlining in credit markets, urban economic development, financial crisis, the subprime and Eurozone crises, banking and financial regulation, and urban development. His research projects at Leeds include one on inequality and finance in Europe, and another on the challenge of inequality and the robotic transition. He coordinates the institutions research hub for the ESRC Rebuilding Macroeconomics project and is a co-investigator on the ESRC Productivity Insights Network. Both projects are seeking to introduce new approaches to policy-making that build in considerations of regional-rebalancing, inequality, and ecological and social sustainability. Gary is an external advisor to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, focusing on issues of debt-led growth and the financing of the SDGs and climate change initiatives in developing countries.
