World Press Freedom Day 2017

Insany Syahbarwathy is the Ambon correspondent for Maluku Province-based iNewsTV and Program Manager of Legal Aid of Press Ambon chapter. She was also the former chairperson of The Alliance of Independent Journalist Ambon chapter, a member of the International Federation of Journalists. In order to counter the journalism that was exarcerbating the sectarian Maluku conflict within the province, she co-established the Centre of Peace Journalism in the aftermath of the conflict. The Centre promotes reconciliation within the journalistic and mass media community, and provides training to journalists on how to use their reporting to promote peace. Its efforts have been vital in maintaining peace in Ambon and have successfully pressured police to investigate incidents of violence against journalists. Syahbarwathy continues to promote her message of reconciliation, peace, and freedom of the press, not only in Maluku, but throughout Indonesia as well.
