Building peace in the minds of men and women

World Press Freedom Day 2017

Wed, 3 May - 14:15 to 15:45

Parallel Session 3

Elizabeth Sonto-Mendoza

Director, Courseline Media International Services

Dr. Elizabeth Sonto-Mendoza has worked with the indigenous people of Oriental Mindoro, Region IVB, Philippines called the "Mangyan." She trained the trainers of the mountainous people on how to gather news which is to be broadcast by the local broadcasters. The plights of the indigenous people in the province moved ESMendoza to understudy on how the Mother Tongue can be used as the primary language in bringing news via local radio stations.
Working with persons with disabilities especially with hearing impairment has been another service. She developed content and worked with the tutor of the sign language. Featured in her weekly local radio programs is the discussion on how the teaching and learning of girls and women especially those who have been dropped out can be remedied. Working with persons in detention challenged Dr. Mendoza in year 2011. Her exposures, interviews and observations of the people behind the bars gave her the chance to write about them and their families.
