She previously worked nearly twenty years as a lead investigative reporter for CNN in Southeast Asia. Maria Ressa was included in TIME's Person of the Year 2018 as one of the journalists around the world combating disinformation. She was also a Jury member of the 2018 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize;
