World Day for Audiovisual Heritage 2017

Come and celebrate the World Day of Audiovisual Heritage of UNESCO in Argentina! This event will have thematic panels and presentations by important institutions and professionals of the cinematographic work and especially of the field of audiovisual preservation. We will remember Salvador Sammaritano, an important personality of Argentine cinema that had contributed with the audiovisual heritage in our country, who will be remembered with a tribute. This event is part of the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, which this year has the theme "Discover, Remember and Share".

 

In line with the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage 2017, The Union of Media Professionals Benin (UPMB), in collaboration with NATCOM UNESCO and through the support of UNESCO Regional Office Abuja, would be marking the 27 October by organizing a two-day capacity-building workshop. The training workshop will target 25 professionals in the print and electronic media. At the end of the two-day capacity-building programme, participants would have gained skills acquisition on the legislation of print and television images, the preservation of audiovisual archives and the use of new professional methods of image conservation.

 

UNESCO and the French National Audiovisual Institute (INA) concluded a partnership agreement in 2015. As a result, INA has digitized 70 hours of UNESCO's audiovisual collections, including films, videos and audio recordings. During this event, the results will be presented and examples of digitized material will be shown. The Director of UNESCO's Division of Public Information, Vincent Defourny, will open the event, followed by the CEO of INA, Mr Laurent Vallet.

 

This event is part of the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, which this year has the theme "Discover, Remember and Share".

 

In observance of International Open Access Week (23-29 October 2017) and World Day for Audiovisual Heritage (27 October 2017), UNESCO New Delhi and the Ministry of Human Resource Development Government of India and IIT Kharagpul are organizing a workshop to deliberate on the state-of-the-art technology, practices, and policies as internationally accepted and available in the domain of digital libraries and establish connections among digital library professionals.

 

The Workshop is expected to lead to establishment of a forum of professionals of the international digital library community for regular and sustained interactions towards development of the profession. The participants of the Workshop will be professionals and researchers of the concerned technical and library science domains, senior librarians and digital library professionals of leading libraries from South Asia and other regions of the world.

 

Kazakh National Conservatory after Kurmangazy with the support of UNESCO organized the Preservation of the Library Fund Workshop in Almaty on 10 October 2017. Sixteen educational institutions and representatives of the concert and theater industry from Kazakhstan participated in the workshop devoted to World Day for Audiovisual Heritage (27 October).

 

30 musical librarians including university librarians and head of departments as well as staff of musical colleges and representatives of musical industries participated within the workshop to improve skills on digitalization and conservation of the national musical heritage. As follow up, the participants will practice digitalization skills to preserve musical notes and musical heritage of their institutions..

The goal of the project is strengthening national Open Education Resources, by using information and communication technologies in digitalization of the rare musical notes. The project continues the commitments made by the conservatory and music libraries in 2014 to support the Paris Declaration on Open Educational Resources.

Building upon UNESCO’s activities in creating an International Network on Traditional Sports and Games, being part of the global project - Creation of an Open Digital Library on Traditional Games, Kenya has been selected as one of the pilot countries to safeguard and promote traditional games through innovation and Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The yearlong project will be launched in Nairobi, Kenya for 2017 UNESCO World Day for Audio-Visual Heritage under the theme “Discover, remember and share”. It will be a strong stimulation to digitalize traditional games as living heritage and strengthen the preservation of audio-visual archives at the national level, as part of a global endeavour to promote the value of audio-visual heritage.

 

The one-day celebration will be organized by UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa in partnership with National Museum of Kenya as well as with financial support from Tencent. The event consists of the launch of the project and an online advocacy campaign - #TraditionalGameson in the morning, and a technical training workshop in the afternoon introducing the methodology and the work-plan of the project.

 

Save Myanmar Film project started in 2017 with the aim of saving decayed and about-to-die films in Myanmar. This workshop, organized by MOWCAP and Save Myanmar Film foundation under the framework of the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage 2017, gives the best practice techniques to maintain the preservation of the films and teaches important restoration ethics. Provided by international film archivists, the training is open for application to all Myanmar citizens who are interested in film restoration.

 

FESTAC-Our Story places in the spotlight the role of audio-visual preservation in ensuring that the memory of FESTAC 77, which was at the time of its occurrence, the largest gathering of representatives of black people on the African continent and the Diaspora, is kept for future generations to see. The first part of the event will be the presentation of the final report on “The Archive Digitalization Project”, by the National of Archives. The second part of the event will be a presentation of an audio-visual recording produced during FESTAC 77 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzAIGgWNHbY with the support of UNESCO to an audience of about 50 persons. This presentation will be followed by a Panel Discussion on “The Histori-Cultural Importance of Audio-visual Preservation”.

 

The commemoration of World Day for Audio Visual Heritage will leverage on a planned exhibition that will showcase audio visual heritage content at the National Museum in Dar es Salaam with the aim to raise awareness on the country’s rich heritage, and to further build the sense of cultural belonging while retaining the wealth of Tanzania’s cultural diversity.

The main objective of this action is to raise awareness, increase visibility and outreach on the archival heritage linked to the struggle for independence with particular emphasis on the role of the United Republic of Tanzania in the African Liberation movement to key target beneficiaries including youth, scholars and tourists.
