International Initiative on Water Quality (IIWQ)
Partners
UNESCO-IHP International Initiative on Water Quality (IIWQ) implements its activities and projects to meet global water quality challenges and priorities through an extensive network of experts and partners, including UN agencies, major international organizations, governmental and non-governmental institutions, the academia and civil society. This global network includes water quality experts, scientists, researchers, water professionals and practitioners, and public health and environmental specialists as well as policy makers and planners in water and related sectors from all around the world. IIWQ actively promotes international scientific collaboration and cooperation opportunities, building synergies, bridging the policy-scientific gap and enhancing capacities of Member States on water quality related issues.
IIWQ Network of Experts & Institutions
- 200 scientific and policy experts, organizations and institutions from over 65 countries around the world working directly and indirectly with water quality challenges and priorities
- A global network of 70 experts and 47 institutions on emerging pollutants between developing and developed countries, as well as among developing countries
- IIWQ Expert Advisory Group - Over 20 water quality experts and specialists from all regions of the world
Key UNESCO partners:
Contribution to UN-Water
UNESCO, through its International Initiative on Water Quality, actively contributes to global and United Nations efforts on water quality, by playing a leading role in the mobilization and strengthening of scientific knowledge and expertise.
UNESCO is an active member of the following UN-Water work in the area of water quality:
- UN-Water Thematic Priority Area on Water Quality
- UN-Water Taskforce on Wastewater Management
- UN-Water Thematic Priority Area on Water Supply and Basic Sanitation
UNESCO’s work on water quality remains strongly relevant to the United Nations system-wide priorities, through synergies and joint efforts with other United Nations agencies and programmes.
Furthermore, IIWQ activities directly contribute to global efforts on water quality by supporting Member States in their endeavors towards attaining the global time-bound goals, targets and action, agreed by the international community. Particularly, those commitments contained in the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals, through the facilitation of scientific cooperation, knowledge dissemination, and the promotion of sustainable solutions, technologies and policy approaches to improve water quality management.
