Throughout six days, all 17 (10 male and 7 female) staff and board members from Sauti FM attended capacity building workshops held by local trainers Mme Mary Casiraghi and Mr Fred Awino. They were introduced to the fundamentals of business and entrepreneurship, income generation and fundraising methods, how to analyze the donor market, use marketing and communication strategies and, nevertheless, avoid common business mistakes.

The trainers suggested alternatives to look for different income sources, strengthening the financial sustainability of the local radio station. They emphasized the importance of business plans, financial planning and management. Participants appreciated the training which included both theoretical and hands-on exercises. Support local radio and community media

Community media, including local radio, should be supported from several angles: strenghtened skills and capacity-building, reinforced network and knowledge sharing, promotion of favorable legislative environment for sustainable growth. UNESCO is supporting community media practically by training professionals, but is also working with duty-bearers to ensure progress at policy-level.
