UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa carried out three activities for Sauti FM journalists from 5 to 13 June 2014 in Asembo Bay, Kenya. The participants, comprising of 8 men and 9 women, were trained on the management of daily contacts and production of mobile friendly content; use of Internet to report; and production of programmes on issues of local concern. The workshops built and strengthened capacities of the radio staff and ensured that more impact programs are produced on agriculture, health and women empowerment.
Mwanedu FM in Kenya acquired new skills on sustainability, income generation and reporting on health issues
Seven local radio journalists, four male and three female, were trained from 31 March to 5 April 2014 in Mwanedu FM, Kenya. The three workshops covered: entrepreneurship, income-generation and reporting on health issues of local concern, specifically on HIV/Aids.
Pangani FM local radio in Tanga, Tanzania, hosted an ICT workshop for 18 participants from nine different local radio stations, on the 17th to the 19th of March 2014. The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Abdullah Mfuruki and Ms. Rose Haji Mwalimu, and was aimed to strengthen the participant’s’ knowledge and skills on monitoring, evaluation approaches and techniques.
A five day workshop on the use of ICTs to report issues of local concern was held in Cape Town, South Africa, from 10 to 14 of March 2014. The trainings were conducted by Mrs. Brenda Leonard and benefited 32 participants, including 15 women, from all 5 radio stations under the project in South Africa, plus Mafeteng Community Radio from Lesotho and !aH FM from Namibia. The trainees included board members, correspondents, managers and journalists from the 7 local radio stations.
UNESCO supported Sauti FM capacity building training, held from 17 to 25 February 2014 in Asembo Bay, Siaya County, Kenya. The training aimed at assisting Sauti FM to provide social services and to use ICTs for local radio broadcasting. It covered the role of correspondents in feeding local news and collecting testimonies; the use of Internet to report on agriculture, health and education; and entrepreneurship and income generation with an emphasis on financial planning and management.
Workshop on the use of internet to report on three thematic areas of local concern in Sauti FM, Kenya
On 19th November 2013, 15 radio journalists (8 men and 7 women) from Sauti FM were trained in Asembo bay, Siaya county, Kenya. The training increased their capacities on the use of internet to report on the three selected areas of local concern: agriculture, health and women empowerment.
From 17th to 18th November 2013, 15 radio Sauti staff (8 men and 7 women) were trained in Asembo Bay, Siaya county, Kenya. The workshop target was to enhance their capacities on producing programs in agriculture, health and women empowerment.
From 12th to 15th December 2013, UNESCO organizaed a workshop for radio station's staff in Zambia to increase their capacities in producing interactive programmes on three community issues: agriculture, health and social governance. Nine participants from all five radio staions within the country were trained by Mr. Martin Mwape.
Radio training on Editorial, Programming, Monitoring and Media Ethics in Radio broadcasting in Lesotho
UNESCO Windhoek cluster office organized and carried out a 3 day training workshop at Mafeteng Community Radio station, from 4th to 6th November 2013. This training aimed at providing training on editorial, programming, monitoring, gender focus and introduction to ICTs to 10 participants (4 women and 6 men). Although there were more males than females participants to the workshop, special attention was made to ensure that there was a gender balance. The training was carried out by Mr. Pheko Mathibeli.
On 8 September 2013, UNESCO staff and trainers from Dar es Salaam travelled to Pangani, Tanga for a workshop to raise capacities of correspondents from five local radios in the United Republic of Tanzania to produce programmes on four selected areas of concern (agriculture, health education, and good governance).
