UNESCO landed in Uganda and had the great pleasure to organize, with the support of the Swedish government, a two-day inception workshop from 04 to 05 November 2015 at Metropole Hotel in Kampala.

Workshop for Bush Radio’s staff and correspondents in South Africa

A five-day workshop, from 27 to31 October 2014, was held at Bush Radio in Cape Town, South Africa, to enhance the station’s operations especially when working with correspondents. The workshop sought to equip correspondents with news gathering and writing techniques – skills required for effective planning and producing radio programmes that are relevant, participatory and gender sensitive; and provide them with the necessary skills and knowledge on how to use ICTs in radio programming, conducting interviews, collecting feedback and testimonies; among others.

Workshops at Sauti FM, in Kenya, empowered journalists to report issues of local concern

UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa carried out three activities for Sauti FM journalists from 5 to 13 June 2014 in Asembo Bay, Kenya. The participants, comprising of 8 men and 9 women, were trained on the management of daily contacts and production of mobile friendly content; use of Internet to report; and production of programmes on issues of local concern. The workshops built and strengthened capacities of the radio staff and ensured that more impact programs are produced on agriculture, health and women empowerment.

Workshop on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief information in Tanzania

Journalists and reporters from all of the nine participating local radios in Tanzania, engaged in this three days’ workshop on covering humanitarian assistance and providing disaster relief information, at the Kahama FM radio station in Shinyanga from 8 to 11 of June 2014.

Workshop on the role of correspondents at Mangelete FM, in Kenya

UNESCO carried out a workshop at Mangelete FM, in Kenya, on the role of correspondents to feed local news and collect testimonies from 3 to 4 June 2014. The training brought together 92 participants, including the correspondents of the radio station, comprising of 23 men and 75 women. It aimed at increasing and deepening their knowledge on how to feed the radio station with relevant and timely information on local news.

Workshop on editorial, programming and monitoring with gender focus in Lusaka, Zambia

A four-day workshop took place in Lusaka, Zambia, on editorial, programming and monitoring matters from 24 to 28 March 2014. The workshop also covered radio formats and gender-sensitive reporting.

Pangani FM hosts workshop on monitoring and techniques, Tanzania

Pangani FM local radio in Tanga, Tanzania, hosted an ICT workshop for 18 participants from nine different local radio stations, on the 17th to the 19th of March 2014. The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Abdullah Mfuruki and Ms. Rose Haji Mwalimu, and was aimed to strengthen the participant’s’ knowledge and skills on monitoring, evaluation approaches and techniques.

Workshop on ICTs, journalism and corresponding in Cape Town, South Africa

A five day workshop on the use of ICTs to report issues of local concern was held in Cape Town, South Africa, from 10 to 14 of March 2014. The trainings were conducted by Mrs. Brenda Leonard and benefited 32 participants, including 15 women, from all 5 radio stations under the project in South Africa, plus Mafeteng Community Radio from Lesotho and !aH FM from Namibia. The trainees included board members, correspondents, managers and journalists from the 7 local radio stations.

Mafeteng Community Radio workshop on journalism and management skills

A whole-week training was delivered to 10 professionals from Mafeteng Community Radio (MCR) in Lesotho. Mr. Thabang Pusoyabone facilitated the workshop from 3 to 7 March 2014, buiding skills on radio editorial programming, reporting issues of local public concern, management, gender-sensitive reporting and income-generation.

Breeze FM's celebration of World Radio Day 2014

To celebrate World Radio Day 2014, on 13 February 2014, Breeze FM based in Chipata, Zambia, organized radio shows to engage listeners and promote a debate around the celebration's theme for this year: "Gender equality and women's empowerment in radio".
