First phase (2012-2014)

107.7 FM

Zambezi FM started in 2006 and currently covers Livingstone, Kazungula, Zimba and parts of Kalomo, including parts of Western Zimbabwe, Eastern Botswana and Northern Namibia, making it the only Zambian commercial station that broadcasts to communities that live and work on the borders of these 4 neighbouring countries. This radio has been chosen because it has experience working with UN agencies on development programs and reaches migrant populations between the 4 countries. Its audience is estimated at 300.000 inhabitants and many more through web streaming.

The project Empowering Local Radios with ICTs conducted a research together with local radio stations to identify main issues of local public concern in the Zambezi FM’s coverage area:

  2. Cancer awareness (e.g. among women)
  3. Disease prevention and sanitation

  1. Agricultural practices
  2. Farming inputs
  3. Access to markets

Social services

  1. Governance issues
  2. Human rights
  3. Social development programmes

Zambezi FM Station Manager Victor Musonda tells the story of how the radio helps to keep the streets of Livingstone clean. About the range of radio programs, partnerships and plans for the future listen below to an audio presentation of Zambezi FM:
