Sengerema building

Sengerema Community Radio is the first local radio in Tanzania managed by women. The radio was set up through the support of the Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), UNESCO and IDRC. It is one of the most mature and successful local radios in Tanzania. Since its inception, this radio has always placed the women development agenda at the forefront.

The project Empowering Local Radios with ICTs conducted a research together with local radio stations to identify main issues of local public concern in the Sengerema Community Radio’s coverage area:

Health

  1. Lack of health facilities / shortage of medical personnel
  2. Malaria
  3. Increasing tuberculosis rate among citizens

Agriculture

  1. Lack of agricultural inputs
  2. Lack of education and knowledge on agricultural techniques
  3. Lack of agricultural experts

Education

  1. Lack of learning facilities
  2. Un-conductive learning environment
  3. Lack of teachers
