106.2 FM

Base FM, previously called Katutura Community Radio, broadcasts since 1995. It changed its name in 2008. The radio covers the Khomas Region in a radius of 100 to 120 Km on average and is home to a worldwide online community through a website and a streaming radio signal. It targets listeners aged 18 to 40 and counts with a gender-balanced news desk of 7 journalists. Together they make sure that all community, regional, national and international news are covered 24/7, together with interviews and information.

The project Empowering Local Radios with ICTs conducted a research together with local radio stations to identify main issues of local public concern in the Base FM’s coverage area:

  2. Teenage pregnancy
  3. Alcohol and drug abuse
  4. Poor diet: importation of food from South Africa makes it very expensive to afford healthy food

Agriculture

  2. No fresh food supply
  3. Lack of information on availability of farms and how to acquire

Unemployment and Gender violence

  1. Poverty
  2. Increased crime rates
  3. Increased levels of crimes of passion
