From December 11-13, 2013, twenty four local managers, board members and accountants representing nine community radios in Tanzania (Kyela, Sengerema, FADECO, Orkonorei FM, Kahama, Mtegani, Micheweni, Pangani and Pambazuko) met in a capacity building gathering with the purpose of enhancing their knowledge and skills at their work places. The event was facilitated by UNESCO and supported by SIDA through the project “Empowering Local Radios with ICTs.”
On 10 December, 2013, twenty-one participants representing nine community radios in Tanzania (Sengerema, FADECO, Orkonorei FM, Kahama, Pangani FM, Kyela, Pambazuko, Mtegani and Micheweni) joined to assess the progress towards using ICTs to support and strengthen local radio broadcasting. Gaining from exchanges with experts and one another, participants came up with a strategy to establish monitoring and evaluation capacities of the local radios by advising them to set up M&E portfolios among their staff, as well as training and coaching for M&E representatives from community radios, crucial for extending and improving data collection. The event was facilitated by UNESCO and supported by SIDA through the project “Empowering Local Radios with ICTs”.
From 4th to 6th December 2013, UNESCO organized a workshop in Lusaka, Zambia, which provided hands-on training for 14 reporters (7 were women) representing 10 local radios. The goal of the workshop was to move the stations into a digital mindset and to expose them to the tools available online that would help to advance them without substantial cost.
Workshop on the use of internet to report on three thematic areas of local concern in Sauti FM, Kenya
On 19th November 2013, 15 radio journalists (8 men and 7 women) from Sauti FM were trained in Asembo bay, Siaya county, Kenya. The training increased their capacities on the use of internet to report on the three selected areas of local concern: agriculture, health and women empowerment.
The training on Humanitarian Information & Disaster Reduction, held at Manhattan Hotel in Pretoria on the 14th and 15th November 2013, focused on preparing community radio practitioners to report disaster risk reduction issues at the community level . Three participants from each of the five community radios participants in the SIDA funded project in South Africa (Bush FM, Valley FM, Radio Riverside, Radio Atlantis and Jozi FM) received an introduction from South African key actors in disaster risk reduction and practical tools when reporting and preventing future disasters.
From 12th to 15th December 2013, UNESCO organizaed a workshop for radio station's staff in Zambia to increase their capacities in producing interactive programmes on three community issues: agriculture, health and social governance. Nine participants from all five radio staions within the country were trained by Mr. Martin Mwape.
The training on Humanitarian Information & Disaster Reduction, held from 06-07 November 2013 at the UN House and Safari Court Hotel in Windhoek, focused on training participants how to communicate humanitarian and disaster risk management activities. The training was conducted by Polytechnic of Namibia media lecturer Wanja Njuguna, and followed a half day UN Interagency Roundtable Communication for Development.
Radio training on Editorial, Programming, Monitoring and Media Ethics in Radio broadcasting in Lesotho
UNESCO Windhoek cluster office organized and carried out a 3 day training workshop at Mafeteng Community Radio station, from 4th to 6th November 2013. This training aimed at providing training on editorial, programming, monitoring, gender focus and introduction to ICTs to 10 participants (4 women and 6 men). Although there were more males than females participants to the workshop, special attention was made to ensure that there was a gender balance. The training was carried out by Mr. Pheko Mathibeli.
The training was conducted at Jozi FM from 28th October to 1st November 2013 by Jacob Ntshangase and Kanyi Mkonza. Seven participants in total, ranging from interns, news reporters as well as a senior programme producer in the station, participated in the training. The group was well balanced with two males and five females.
UNESCO Windhoek Office sponsored the Financial Management training, as part of the SIDA funded project “Empowering local radio with ICT’s”, for 10 community radio stations from South Africa, Namibia and Lesotho. The training took place from the 14 – 18 October 2013 at Fountains Inn Cape Town, South Africa. The trainers were Greg Kakora, and auditor and financial advisor and Brenda Leonard, the Station Manager of Bush Radio. The 23 participants included the Station Managers, Programme Managers and an additional staff member (12 males and 11 females).
