Mwanedu FM in Kenya acquired new skills on sustainability, income generation and reporting on health issues
Seven local radio journalists, four male and three female, were trained from 31 March to 5 April 2014 in Mwanedu FM, Kenya. The three workshops covered: entrepreneurship, income-generation and reporting on health issues of local concern, specifically on HIV/Aids.
A whole-week training was delivered to 10 professionals from Mafeteng Community Radio (MCR) in Lesotho. Mr. Thabang Pusoyabone facilitated the workshop from 3 to 7 March 2014, buiding skills on radio editorial programming, reporting issues of local public concern, management, gender-sensitive reporting and income-generation.
Sauti FM, from Kenya, has now improved knowledge on sustainability. It will facilitate editorial independence and better management. From 20 to 25 February 2014, the radio station hosted workshops on theory and practice of financial planning, management, entrepreneurship and income generation.
UNESCO supported Sauti FM capacity building training, held from 17 to 25 February 2014 in Asembo Bay, Siaya County, Kenya. The training aimed at assisting Sauti FM to provide social services and to use ICTs for local radio broadcasting. It covered the role of correspondents in feeding local news and collecting testimonies; the use of Internet to report on agriculture, health and education; and entrepreneurship and income generation with an emphasis on financial planning and management.
From December 11-13, 2013, twenty four local managers, board members and accountants representing nine community radios in Tanzania (Kyela, Sengerema, FADECO, Orkonorei FM, Kahama, Mtegani, Micheweni, Pangani and Pambazuko) met in a capacity building gathering with the purpose of enhancing their knowledge and skills at their work places. The event was facilitated by UNESCO and supported by SIDA through the project “Empowering Local Radios with ICTs.”
UNESCO Windhoek Office sponsored the Financial Management training, as part of the SIDA funded project “Empowering local radio with ICT’s”, for 10 community radio stations from South Africa, Namibia and Lesotho. The training took place from the 14 – 18 October 2013 at Fountains Inn Cape Town, South Africa. The trainers were Greg Kakora, and auditor and financial advisor and Brenda Leonard, the Station Manager of Bush Radio. The 23 participants included the Station Managers, Programme Managers and an additional staff member (12 males and 11 females).
The national forum of radios on ICTs and sustainability in Lusaka, Zambia was promoted to emphasize the scope and expected impact of the UNESCO project, exchange good local radio practices, and establish standing relations among the radios, as well as to promote knowledge of the project’s wider relevance to media pluralism and galvanize support to loca media. The event was attended by a total of 18 participants (4 women), representatives of the 5 supported radios in Zambia and other national partners such as: the Panos Institute for Southern Africa (PSAf), the Zambia National Commission for UNESCO as well as the Zambia Community Media Forum (ZaCoMeF).
The workshop carried out in Chipata, Zambia, provided financial planning and management capacitation to 10 participants (4 women) from the 5 participating local radios in Zambia. This training contributed to: build the capacity of the radio stations to plan and control financial resources (Income & expenditure, budgeting, Cashflow projections and growth plans); empower local radio stations for the use of ICTs in financial planning and management, including internet applications; development of financial principles and values (transparency, efficiency, accountability, trust); and elaboration of financial plans for their financial resourcing for 2014 and 2015.
