Strategic Planning Workshop for Koch Fm in Nairobi, Kenya

Knock knock! Great news! UNESCO supported Koch FM to hold its 4-day workshop to develop its first Strategic Plan since its inception in the year 2006. The workshop took place at Jowanga Holdings Hotel, Huruma, Nairobi from 15 to 18 September 2015. It attracted the participation of 25 participants comprising of 16 men and 9 women from Koch FM Team (K-Crew), Koch FM listeners and stakeholders from the civil society organizations (CSO).

Training Workshop on Investigative Journalism during the Election Period in Uganda

One of UNESCO’s mission is to assure that information is made and remains accessible to everyone. With this idea in mind, the organization once again developed a workshop on investigative journalism during the election period in Uganda.

The event took place at the Doves Nest Hotel in Gulu, Uganda from 27 to 29 January 2016, and brought together 12 participants, 4 women and 8 men, who belonged to four community radio stationsnamely: Speak FM, Mama FM, Radio Apac and Nakaseke community radio.

Financial and Management Workshop: Developing an economic Vision for Local Radios

End of December 2015 was organized in Gitega, Burundi, a workshop led by UNESCO aimed to train local radio stations on financial and management planning.

Starting on December 24th, the coordinator of this three-day workshop, Mr Paul Niyungeko, concentrated all his efforts on instructing the three participants, of whom one was a woman, in the financial and management field in order to help them develop an economic vision that would help the local radio reach its financial goals in a strategic, profitable, and viable way.

Workshop on technical proficiency for community radios at West Wind Hotel in Meru County, Kenya

UNESCO, together with the Swedish government and the great help from Community Media Support (CMS), conducted a three-day training workshop on technical proficiency for community radios from 09 to 11 November 2015 at West Wind Hotel in Meru County, Kenya. The training attracted 12 participants, either staff or managers, from 4 community radios namely Sauti FM, Mwanedu FM, Mangelete FM and Mugambo Jwetu FM. The representation of women also was ensured as 5 participants out of the total were female media professionals.

Inception workshop for UNESCO SIDA funded project themed: “Empowering Local Radios with ICTs" in Uganda

UNESCO landed in Uganda and had the great pleasure to organize, with the support of the Swedish government, a two-day inception workshop from 04 to 05 November 2015 at Metropole Hotel in Kampala.

Contribute to Local Radio

Support local radio and community media

Community media, including local radio, should be supported from several angles: strenghtened skills and capacity-building, reinforced network and knowledge sharing, promotion of favorable legislative environment for sustainable growth. UNESCO is supporting community media practically by training professionals, but is also working with duty-bearers to ensure progress at policy-level.
