International Organization For Standardization

Objectives and Mission: 

Promote development of standardization and related activities worldwide with a view to facilitating international exchange of goods and services and to developing cooperation in the sphere of intellectual, scientific, technological and economic activity.

General description: 

International Standards prepared by about 3,000 technical bodies covering virtually all areas of technology, with participation of national delegations and some 580 international organizations in liaison. Develops policies through, inter alia, 3 policy development committees covering: developing country matters; conformity assessment; consumer issues. ISO technical committees organize regular meetings. Together with IEC and International Telecommunication Union (ITU) member of World Standards Cooperation (WSC), whose primary function is to strengthen and advance the voluntary consensus-based international standards system.
