United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
UNDP works in nearly 170 countries and territories, helping to achieve the eradication of poverty, and the reduction of inequalities and exclusion. It helps countries to develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities and build resilience in order to sustain development results.
UNDP is working to strengthen new frameworks for development, disaster risk reduction and climate change. It supports countries' efforts to achieve the new Sustainable Development Goals, which will guide global development priorities for the next 15 years.
UNDP focuses on helping countries build and share solutions in three main areas:
- Sustainable development
- Democratic governance and peacebuilding
- Climate and disaster resilience
In all its activities, UNDP encourages the protection of human rights and the empowerment of women, minorities and the poorest and most vulnerable.
In the context of electoral violence in Africa, the media have paid a great price, with journalists intimidated, harassed and sometimes killed. There have been cases of rival political groups attacking and vandalizing media houses owing to disputes over coverage.
Voluntary contributions have strengthened UNESCO’s work in freedom of expression in dozens of countries around the world.
