Tools for water security

Knowledge Forum on Water Security
UNESCO produces a large variety of tools and initiatives for water security. Most documents can be downloaded free of charge.

UNESCO Water Security Initiatives

Water scarcity and quality
For many countries, water scarcity represents the most pressing challenge to socio-economic and human development. Water scarcity can be exacerbated by climate change, especially in arid and semi-arid zones.

Water-related hazards or hydrohazards are the result of complex interactions between the ocean, atmosphere and land. Climate change is expected to cause an increase in floods and droughts.

International Sediment Initiative (ISI)
Established in 2002, the ISI is a global initiative to assess erosion and sediment transport to marine, lake or reservoir environments aimed at the creation of a holistic approach for the remediation and conservation of surface waters, closely linking science with policy and management needs.

The International Drought Initiative (IDI)

IDI aims at providing a platform for networking and dissemination of knowledge and information between international entities that are active working on droughts.

Mobile Applications

iRain
iRain is an invitation for people everywhere to help monitor the impacts of the climate on the water cycle. This App will crowd-source data on rainfall, which is essential for water resource planning and preparing for floods and droughts.

Rainmapper
Within this framework, UNESCO-IHP and the CHRS launched the RainMapper mobile app for real-time global precipitation monitoring.

Glaciers App
Established in 2002, the ISI is a global initiative to assess erosion and sediment transport to marine, lake or reservoir environments aimed at the creation of a holistic approach for the remediation and conservation of surface waters, closely linking science with policy and management needs.

Droughts and Floods Monitoring

National Drought Observatories

The observatories where established aiming at reducing vulnerability to droughts and other agroclimatic events with relevant, rapid response information for monitoring and early warning purposes is.

English

Drought Atlas

The Drought Atlas for Latin America and the Caribbean contributes to this effort, by providing an effective tool to raise awareness on their exposure to drought.

English

G-WADI GEO-server

IHP and the Centre of Hydrometeorology and Remote Sensing (CHRS) at the University of California-Irvine are collaborating to provide real-time satellite precipitation data within the framework of the Water and Development Information for Arid Lands a Global Network (G-WADI).

English

Latin American and Caribbean Flood and Drought monitor
The objective of the Latin American Drought Monitor is to provide an assessment tool of current and expected drought and flood conditions for the Region.

FLOODIS
The FLOODIS project (2013-2015) developed a platform to alert the population (professional users and citizens) of an impending disaster and subsequently provide them with regular updates and additional resources, such as geographical information (map layers via a mobile mapping application) concerning the disaster.
