Building peace in the minds of men and women

World Radio Day 2019 to celebrate dialogue, tolerance and peace

07 February 2019

On 13 February, UNESCO and radio broadcasters will celebrate World Radio Day, whose theme this year is Dialogue, Tolerance and Peace. During the Day, UNESCO will showcase how radio can, through programmes and interviews, help listeners understand current events and contribute to causes of general interest such as the right to education and health, gender equality and the integration of migrants.

UNESCO is calling on radio broadcasters worldwide to take part in the celebration by, for example, hosting discussions on otherness, involving their audiences, giving a voice to the voiceless, inviting listeners to speak of their experiences and promoting participatory actions in a spirit of tolerance and peace.

UNESCO has also made some resources available to broadcasters free of charge. They include promotional jingles in the six official languages of the United Nations and other content that can be used to promote the Day on air and on social media. It is also organizing an international contest open to all radio broadcasters.

Finally, on 13 February, Radio France International, Radio Montecarlo Doualiya and Radio UNESCO will broadcast live in English, French and Spanish from UNESCO’s Headquarters in Paris. Their programmes will be available on FM, DAB, the Connect on Air, a professional platform, and on unesco.org (11 am to 4 pm, Central European Time). Also during the Day, there will be broadcasts of workshops on writing for radio, podcasting and talk show hosting, demonstrating that radio brings freedom of expression to us all.
