It is finally here. The first Media and Information Literate (MIL) City celebrates Global MIL Week. Imagine your city not only transmitting information to you but also helping to enhance your information capacities by stimulating your critical thinking.
What if your transportation system, health care system, local government authority, entertainment industry, and other city actors, all become social drivers and spaces of informal learning on MIL and without much effort on your part?
Amidst the present outcry about disinformation, privacy and data protection, there are silent great waves of opportunities provided by today’s complex information and communication landscape. These include the waves of opportunities for diversity of voices, social engagement, lifelong learning dialogue, tolerance, countering hate and promoting peace.
Global MIL Week 2018 acknowledges the challenges and equally seeks to unlock the sounds of these great waves of opportunities causing them to roar as great waves should. Global MIL Week will take place this year from 24 to 31 October. Its aim is to put critical thinking and people’s empowerment through MIL on the international development agenda as well as on the agenda of cities.
The official website of Global MIL Week 2018 has been launched. The permanent link is https://en.unesco.org/globalmilweek2018. Information related to various components of Global MIL Week 2018, ways to celebrate the Week, registration of your local events in celebration of the Week, its design concept, agenda, organizing committees, partners, and the MIL City concept etc. can be accessed on the website.
The website is currently in English and will be available in multiple languages.
The pioneering visual concept of Global MIL Week 2018 is now also open to the public. It is in line with the theme of Global MIL Week 2018 – “Media and Information Literate City: Voices, Powers and Change Makers”. It illustrates the first MIL City celebrating Global MIL Week 2018. This first virtual MIL city encompasses a variety of elements that a MIL City should have, and serves as a vivid example for real cities to aspire to become pioneer MIL Cities (see more information about MIL City). The visual concept is available for downloading, displaying and printing in multiple formats.
The Global MIL Week 2018 Feature Conference, the Eighth MIL and Intercultural Dialogue Conference, will be held from 24 to 25 October 2018 in Kaunas, Lithuania. The Global MIL Week Youth Agenda Forum will be held on 26 October 2018 in Riga, Latvia. These two feature events are co-organized and respectively hosted by the Vytautas Magnus University and the University of Latvia. Other main activities to take place during the Week including the MIL CLICKS webinar are being prepared.
Global MIL Week and its Feature Events are for everyone – civil society, local government officials, academics, and other city actors alike. Join us at the Feature Events as speakers or participants, come and set up an exhibition of your work, and celebrate with us through your local events online or offline.
The deadline of the call for papers/presentations for the Feature Conference has been extended until 16 July 2018. Persons who wish to speak at the Feature Conference are invited to submit an abstract via this link. Non-academic and academic submissions are encouraged. Selections of submitted abstracts will be made and results will be announced by 31 July 2018.
Global MIL Week is a major occasion for stakeholders around the world to review and celebrate the progress achieved towards “MIL for all”.
