Strengthening the development and adaptation of Media and Information Literacy in the Maghreb Region
Media and Information Literacy (MIL), gives people the skills to think critically about the content of the information they receive and share, the sources of the information they use, and the role of communication in respecting human rights and sustainable development. MIL encompasses a living set of human competencies. Over the past decade in particular, its scope, urgency, and application have increased. By providing a rich variety of capacity-building resources, such as curricula, guidelines, and assessment frameworks, UNESCO supports the development of MIL competencies.
UNESCO’s Office for the Maghreb aims to support accredited educational institutions based in the Maghreb region (or in collaboration with institutions outside the region) to achieve the following:
Strengthen existing courses that already contains adaptation and integration of MIL
Develop new courses that will integrate or adapt the new UNESCO Think Critically, Click Wisely curriculum in MIL courses or other courses particularly in a multi-disciplinary manner.
A grant is available to these institutions to support course development on a case-by-case basis. The grant varies between USD5,000 to USD10,000, depending on the number of applications received.
Criteria of eligibility
Geographical area covered: countries of the Maghreb region, namely Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia.
Only institutions registered as legal entities in their own countries and with up-to-date documentation will be able to submit applications to this Call. They must also meet the following criteria:
Proposals must be submitted in partnership by at least two educational institutions located in the Maghreb region to further encourage cross-collaboration. Collaboration with institutions outside the Maghreb region is possible if there are at least two educational institutions located in the Maghreb region in the partnership.
At least one of the institutions in the proposal should be experienced in developing and teaching MIL.
Good written communication skills in English or French. (The proposed activities can be conducted in any languages, but the proposal and reports must be provided in English or French)
The project must be aligned with the mission of UNESCO's Communication and Information Sector.
Proposals must provide clear and realistic costs as to how the grant budget will be spent, as outlined in the detail budget.
Proposal must have well-defined goals, objectives, and strategies for project delivery evidenced by a well-developed project plan with realistic milestones and timelines.
Have a clearly defined end product and outcome.
Scope of project
The following is a non-exhaustive list of areas that could be covered by the project proposals:
Proposals that aim to strengthen existing courses that already include MIL adaptation and integration.
Proposals that aim to develop new courses that will adapt or integrate the new UNESCO Think Critically, Click Wisely curriculum into existing MIL courses or other courses, particularly in a multidisciplinary manner.
Innovative proposals with a multidisciplinary approach are encouraged.
Proposals that result in the strengthening of Open Educational Resources are encouraged.
Proposals that address gender inequality from a MIL approach are encouraged.
The project must be implemented within 12 months after the signing of the official agreement.
If selected, the institution will submit the following documentation to UNESCO during the partnership period:
A detailed finalized work plan of all activities and timeline to be submitted to UNESCO for final approval after consultations.
A progress report on the implementation of the project to monitor the achievement of objectives, including data and implementation challenges.
A final report including the above data and overall conclusions on successes and challenges.
Submission dates for the documentation will be determined based on the proposed timeline and work plan.
UNESCO operates under an open access policy using Creative Commons IGO 3.0 licenses to share its content. Works funded and produced by UNESCO must be able to be freely used and distributed. The Contractor shall grant UNESCO worldwide copyright in the Work, which shall have the right, during the term of copyright, to translate, adapt, reproduce, perform, broadcast, communicate to the public, print, and publish in any language and in any form, all or any part of the Work, and to authorize others to exercise all or any of its rights hereunder.
Assurance of quality
UNESCO shall have the right, at its own expense, to have the Contractor's books and records relating to the project bank account and Form AM 10-10 reviewed.
UNESCO may conduct or arrange for a periodic evaluation of the Contractor's implementation of the Project. For this purpose, the Contractor shall, at UNESCO's request, allow representatives or delegates of UNESCO to visit the project site(s) and facilities, inspect the property and examine the books and records relating to the project funded by UNESCO.
