The Group of Francophone Countries to UNESCO awarded UNESCO’s Culture Sector the « Coup de cœur » prize, for its success in multimedia promotion of UNESCO’s programmes and actions in the French language. Actor Michael Hirsch was Master of Ceremonies at the gala evening hosted on 27 March 2017 at UNESCO’s Paris Headquarters. H. E. Mr Jean-Frederic Jauslin, Ambassador of the Swiss Confederation to the International Organization of Francophonie recognized UNESCO’s Culture Sector for its dissemination of information through publications, major events and workshops, the web and social media platforms. He noted especially its reach to the French-speaking world in ways that resonate with the main theme of the evening: « La Francophonie en Liberté » or “Francophonie in Freedom”.
Mechtild Rössler, Director of the Heritage Division and the World Heritage Center, accepted the prize on behalf of the Culture Sector, and recalled that “by supporting several activities related to heritage and creativity, the Francophone Group is an important and necessary ally for UNESCO.” As part of the celebrations around 20 March, International Day of Francophonie, the event included recitation of classic texts and focused on freedom of expression and access to information, key mandates of UNESCO.
