Here is another issue of the UNESCO periodical, the UNESCO Courier, dedicated to the 50 years of the fight against the illicit trafficking of cultural goods.
"The illicit flow of cultural goods is now believed to be the third-largest in terms of volume, after drugs and arms. A cultural issue, this shady business that thrives in conflict-ridden areas, has also become a threat to international peace and security. The 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property, which celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year, is more crucial than ever in this fight," Mr Ernesto Ottone Ramirez, UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Culture, pointed out.
This issue covers a number of interesting issues ranging from the itinerary of a stolen Greek funerary Greek stele that was returned to home through the focus on social networks that have become a new El Dorado for traffickers to the example of the Netherlands National Museum of World Cultures confronting the Netherlands colonial past – you will find this and much more in the new issue of the UNESCO Courier.
