For many, April is all about jazz, given that for eleven years the International Jazz Day is being celebrated all around the world. This year, as previous ones, the UNESCO Office will co-organize the National Jazz Week between April 21 and 30.
Under the production of Music Agent of Change Foundation (MUSAC), the IV version of the Chile Jazz festival for Peace will offer national concerts and free masterclasses in Santiago, Valparaíso, Concepción and Chillán.
Among the guests, the festival will feature the presence of Danilo Pérez, one of the most influential jazz pianists of recent decades, multi-winner of the Grammy and recent Doris Duke Award for his contribution to jazz and his fight for human rights.
"The history of jazz is rooted in supporting and accepting cultural differences as a basis for human dignity, democracy and civil rights. Its rhythms and diversity have strengthened the fight against all forms of discrimination and racism. UNESCO believes in the power of jazz as a vehicle for peace, dialogue and mutual understanding, and it is for this reason that we support this type of artistic and educational activities in Chile." Nicolás del Valle, head of UNESCO's culture area in Chile.
Following Orión Lion, artistic director of the Chile Jazz Festival for Peace and co-organizer of this Week, "Considering the current crisis the world is facing, it is more than ever important for artists to play for peace, dialogue, respect and recognition; and as UNESCO highlights jazz is a tool that can certainly contribute to it."
In addition to Danilo Pérez, the festival will count, amongst others, with the participation of Patricia Zárate, saxophonist, music therapist and feminist; Carlos Agrazal, saxophonist, who offers a fusion of Panamanian rhythms; Andy Baeza, legendary drummer of Chilean jazz; Raúl Aliaga, percussionist of the group Congreso; Ciara Moser, Austrian bassist and ambassador for Berklee College of Music.
The National Jazz Week will be supported by the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage, in collaboration with the UNESCO Office in Chile, the Music Agent of Change Foundation (MUSAC), the Danilo Pérez Foundation, the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, the renowned international music school Berklee College of Music (Boston), the Embassy of Panama in Chile, the Consevatorio de Santiago and the Extension Center of the National Institute (CEINA).
The master classes will be offered online through the Chile Jazz festival for Peace channel.
