On 2 June, the Director-General signed an agreement renewing cooperation between UNESCO and the Xinhua News Agency.
The renewal was signed with Mr Li Congjun, President of Xinhua, one of the world's largest news agencies.
"The world needs more knowledge about development, about sustainability, about the great diversity of cultures, and this is why our partnership is so important," said the Director-General.
Li Congjun agreed, underlining the importance of the renewal.
"This is a landmark of our cooperation and a new starting point in our partnership," said Li Congjun.
"UNESCO has an important message to bring to the world," said Irina Bokova. "And our partnership is essential for sharing this widely, across all UNESCO fields of activity."
UNESCO and Xinhua have agreed to carry out common projects to contribute to the promotion and dissemination of information about UNESCO’s priorities and activities.
This builds on a strong partnership established between UNESCO and Xinhua in 2010.
After the signature ceremony, the Director-General gave an extensive interview to CNC, where she explored the strength of UNESCO's partnership with China -- from safeguarding cultural heritage and promoting quality education in Africa to harnessing the sciences for the benefit of all.
The Director-General underlined the importance of the visit by HE President Xi Jinping to UNESCO on 27 March, 2014, where he spoke about the importance of educational, scientific and cultural cooperation to strengthen the foundations for sustainable development and lasting peace.
