Mr Hans d’Orville on behalf of the UNESCO Director-General and Ms Ding Xiaoyan, the Vice Mayor of the Shaoxing Municipal Government, signed the Agreement on 5 March 2013 at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
The framework of cooperation established between the Shaoxing Municipal Government and UNESCO is on areas of mutual interest as well as the advancement of their institutional missions and shared goals. Foreseeing cooperation in the areas of cultural heritage conservation and promotion, culture for sustainable development, and creative cities in the medium-term strategy, the Partnership Agreement comes at a crucial time for UNESCO, particularly considering the forthcoming international Congress “Culture: A Key to Sustainable Development” organized by UNESCO to take place in Hangzhou, China from 15 to 17 May 2013.
This international Congress on the theme of culture and sustainable development is a high-level international event to examine and advocate for the multifaceted role of culture in achieving sustainable development goals. The results of this Congress also will serve as a substantive input to the discussions on the framework for the post-2015 development agenda.
