UNESCO and the Qatar Fund For Development meet in Doha
On 23 May, UNESCO visited the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), held fruitful discussion on their ongoing and future cooperation and signed a new agreement.
The objective of this meeting was to discuss the main results achieved so far by the UNESCO Heritage Emergency Fund that is generously funded by the State of Qatar through the QFFD. Qatar was the first to contribute to this Fund, which ensured a catalytic effect and allowed UNESCO to raise additional resources from several other donors. The meeting was also the occasion to discuss ways to strengthen the cooperation in other areas of work and through a long-term partnership.
Thanks to the contribution from QFFD and other donors, UNESCO was able in the past year to respond to numerous cultural emergencies in different parts of the world, such as Syria, Yemen, Myanmar, Haiti and Peru. Activities included rapid assessments, immediate safeguarding measures and capacity building.
On the side of the meeting, an agreement was signed to support UNESCO's education activities in the area of prevention of violent extremism, in the amount of USD 50,000.
