UNESCO and FAO Train Community Facilitators/ Teachers on Pastoralist Livelihood and Education Field Schools (PLEFS) Integrated Curriculum

FAO and UNESCO in collaboration with the Ministry of Education Science and Technology, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of Animal Resources provided refresher training to 33 teachers/community facilitators and 3 partner staff on the Pastoralist Livelihood and Education Field Schools (PLEFS) Integrated Curriculum Approach from 12 May to 2nd June 2017, in Rumbek, Lakes State.

The training which was conducted under the EU funded “Enhanced Knowledge and Education for Resilient Pastoral Livelihoods in South Sudan" project; brought together participants from five (5) counties of former Lakes State  (Rumbek Centre, Wulu, Yirol East, Yirol West and Awerial). The overall objective of the training was to build the capacity of the teachers and community facilitators on the Integrated Livelihood and Education intervention to provide production resources, literacy, numeracy and life skills to pastoralist in the cattle camps.

The three weeks training covered a wide range of topics which included among others: PLEFS concepts and implementation approach approaches, teaching methodologies/pedagogy ((scheme of works, lesson plan and timetable), literacy and numeracy, technical topics on animal production -animal health, animal diseases, crop production, Income Generating Activities (IGA), peace building and conflict resolution. The training participants will use the knowledge gained through the training to provide ongoing learning sessions in the 10 selected cattle camps and one community.

The closing ceremony was officiated by the State Minster of Health (Also the caretaker State Minister of Education), Director General Animal Resources Western Lakes, and the Director Alternative Education System, UNESCO and FAO project team, partners (IIRR, NPA) and media representatives.
