On 1 October 2013, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, met with the President of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Rustem Khamitov, at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. The meeting took place on the occasion of day-long celebration organized by the Republic of Bashkortostan at the Organization.
The Director-General and the President signed a Communiqué extending cooperation between Bashkortostan and UNESCO in the fields of education, the natural and social sciences and culture.
The celebration included two round tables on the “Educational Environment of the Republic for Sustainable Development” and on the “Natural and Cultural Property of Ural-Batyr Land and the Bashkir Urals Biosphere Reserve”, as well as an exhibition entitled “Bashkortostan – Pearl of Russia” dedicated to 15 years of cooperation between the Republic of Bashkortostan and UNESCO, that the Director-General inaugurated.
“UNESCO and the Republic of Bashkortostan expressed today their commitment to strengthen their work together,” said the Director-General.“Our partnership builds on a shared vision of the importance of quality learning, of harnessing the power of the sciences, of safeguarding and promoting cultural heritage and the diversity of cultural expressions.”
At the end of their meeting, the President of Bashkortostan awarded the Director-General with the Order of the People’s Friendship of the Republic of Bashkortostan.
