On 28 January 2020, UNESCO and the Government of Azerbaijan signed an amendment to extend their standing Framework Agreement until September 2023. ‘The cooperation that we have developed with Azerbaijan through this agreement has proved to be highly strategic and I am delighted that we will be able to build on the excellent results that have already been generated in areas such as girls education, intangible cultural heritage, and the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict’ said Jean-Yves Le Saux, Director of UNESCO’s Bureau of Strategic Planning.

H.E Anar Karimov, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to UNESCO underscored the Government’s commitment to pursuing its partnership with UNESCO, and highlighted that the next set of activities to be financed under the agreement, would also benefit extensively from the lessons learned from the joint mid-term evaluation. “We have already identified a number of key entry points for future cooperation with UNESCO including support for programmes as well as secondments” he said, “and we are really looking forward to moving to the implementation phase”.
