In late 2012, the Director-General of UNESCO established a Senior Experts’ Group to rethink education in today’s fast-changing world.
A first meeting of these experts was organized in Paris in February 2013 (see February 2013 meeting report). Building on that, the goal of this second meeting of senior experts (Paris, 27-28 February 2014) is to prepare the first full draft of their report provisionally entitled ‘Rethinking Learning in a Changing World’.
Based on the integrated vision of learning outlined in the 1996 UNESCO landmark publication Learning: The Treasure Within, the senior experts are examining emerging development trends in today’s increasingly interconnected, interdependent, and complex world and considering both the challenges and opportunities that these trends present for the creation, validation, reproduction, dissemination, and appropriation of knowledge. The intent of the report is aspirational, setting out the parameters and principles for a vision of learning in the 21st century.
While the report of UNESCO’s senior experts intends to supplement the current global debate on education and learning in the post-2015 development agenda, its ambition goes beyond. The report aims to stimulate debate about the fundamental principles that may guide educational policy and practice in the decades ahead.
