Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, today received the visit of Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, accompanied by Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage.

They discussed boosting cooperation between Canada and UNESCO, particularly on issues concerning cultural diversity, the prevention of violent extremism through education and Holocaust education.

The Director-General spoke of UNESCO leadership role in celebrating 2019 as International Year of Indigenous Languages under the aegis of the United Nations and of the work of the Montreal-based UNESCO Institute for Statistics.

Mr Trudeau is the first Prime Minister of Canada to visit UNESCO since his predecessor Jean Chrétien in 1994. His visit illustrates the strong commitment of Canada to UNESCO.
