On 10-11 September 2017, a Regional Validation Meeting for a GEF/UNDP Project “Enabling implementation of the Strategic Action Programme (SAP) for the rational and equitable management of the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System (NSAS)” took place in Corinthia Hotel, Khartoum. The meeting was organized by the UNESCO Khartoum Office in collaboration with UNESCO IHP, UNDP/GEF, the Ministry of Water Resources, Irrigation and Electricity (MoWR) and the Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science & Culture (NatCom). The meeting included participation from representatives of the Joint Authority for the Management of Nubian Sandstone Aquifer from Sudan, Chad, Egypt and Libya, who were complemented by representatives from UNESCO IHP, the MoWR, Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Urban Development, NatCom, UNESCO Water Network in Sudan, etc. The objective of the meeting was to validate the project document (PD) for the project prepared by UNESCO IHP and National Consultants from Egypt, Libyan, Egypt and Sudan for submission to GEF Secretariat for funding approval. The meeting and other activities for preparing the PD were funded by Project Preparation Grant (PPG) of GEF.
The meeting was honoured by the Minister of Water Resources, Irrigation and Electricity in Sudan, H.E. Amb. Muataz Musa, State Minister in the Ministry of Education in Sudan, H.E. Mr. Abdelhafiz Al Sadig; Undersecretary in the MoWR, H.E. Dr. Omer Mustafa Abu Al Gasim, and UNESCO Representative to Sudan, H.E. Dr. Pavel Kroupkine.
After welcoming speeches of the UNESCO Representative and State Minister for Education and introduction of the participants, an UNESCO expert, Dr. Peter Whalley, presented an overview of the PD preparation, which was discussed by the participants afterwards resulting in the first set of comments.
Next day, a technical session, after a short common discussion led by H.E Dr. Omer Musa Abu Al Gasim, the Undersecretary in MoWR, was enriched by addresses of Prof. Seefeldin Hamad, the Head of Sudanese Delegation in NSAS Joint Authority, Eng. Al Mahdi A. Megrbi, the Head of Libyan Delegation in NSAS Joint Authority, Prof. Mohamed Abdel Motleb, the Head of Egyptian Delegation in NSAS Joint Authority, Mr. Idriss Ali Malloum, the Chairperson of Joint Authority and Head of Chadian delegation, and Amb. Muataz Musa, the Minister for Water Resources, Irrigation and Electricity in Sudan. The presentations of UNESCO experts Ms. Marguerite Chaisemartin and Dr. Peter Whalley stimulated one more round of discussions resulting in the second set of comments to the PD.
Finally, the UNESCO/IHP team integrated these comments of representatives of Sudan, Egypt, Libya and Chad in the PD, and sent the document to GEF for approval.
