Rallying the International Community to Safeguard Syria’s Cultural Heritage
International Expert Meeting - 26 to 28 May 2014 - Room XII, UNESCO Headquarters - by invitation only
The 3 day international expert meeting, organized with the generous support of the Flemish Government, falls within the framework of the UNESCO-European Union project: ‘Emergency safeguarding of the Syrian Cultural Heritage’, launched in March 2014.
The meeting has two key objectives:
- to examine the current situation in Syria, and propose practical responses to safeguarding Syrian cultural heritage; and
- to lay foundations for future operational cooperation for the post-conflict recovery and reconstruction phase.
Discussions will centre on three central cultural pillars:
- Built heritage
- Movable heritage
- Intangible heritage
The meeting will comprise structured panel discussions, followed by more focused deliberations where participants will break into thematic expert groups.

- establishment of a protocol on cooperation and copyright
- action plan on the way forward to protect Syria’s invaluable heritage
The results of the meeting will be presented to the UNESCO Member States, invited to attend the last session on the final day, at which time Irina Bokova, the UNESCO Director-General, will provide the closing remarks of this high-level International Expert Meeting.
